The US likes to pride itself on the idea that they lead the world in terms of innovation and movements towards the future. In one industry, however, the US is not only lagging behind the rest of the world, but also their neighbors to the North, Canada. While the US government has launched an all-out assault on the online gambling industry, Canada has embraced the idea of thousands of additional jobs and millions of dollars in revenue that Internet gambling can provide. It has become clear in the past year that the two countries are heading in opposite directions when it comes to online gambling. “Canadian provinces are giving a blueprint to US states on how to move forward with online gambling regulations without having to wait for federal laws to change,” said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. “The longer the US waits to act on this ever-growing industry, the more they are falling behind other countries.” Individual states have already started the movement to regulate online poker. New Jersey lawmakers passed a bill that would have given Atlantic city casinos the right to operate online casinos, but Governor Chris Christie vetoed the legislation. Iowa recently became the first state to regulate online poker, when they passed a bill requesting a report from the Iowa Racing Commission on Internet gambling. On a federal level, several proposals have been defeated in recent years. Representative Barney Frank has been the leading lawmaker pushing for online poker regulations, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid proposed a bill in the lame duck session of 2010, but the legislation was defeated as well. Reid and Frank have vowed again this year to make a plea to their fellow legislators to regulate Internet gambling. More and more politicians are hearing from the people they represent after the Department of Justice’s recent crackdown on PokerStars, Full Tilt Poker, and Absolute Poker, three sites that were providing millions of online poker enthusiasts a place to play online.
