Scheduled to start on 17th May 2011, the French open is the second Grand Slam of the year and one of the most eagerly anticipated so the next few weeks will be a busy time for the worlds top players as they try to achieve peak form in the run up to the Roland Garros tournament.
It is the only Grand Slam event to be played on clay courts and has been hosted at the Roland Garros stadium, in Paris, since 1928. Although well known for producing a slower game due to the surface, this can usually result in longer and more exciting rallies which is fantastic for fans.
The current Mens Champion and World number one Rafael Nadal will be back and hoping to retain his title, Nadal already has five previous victories in the tournament to his credit and is the bookies odds on favourite at the moment. The man to watch will be the winner of the 2011 Australian Open, Serbian, Novak Djokovic who won in Melbourne in fine style in January and has retained his great form so far this season.
The Ladies tournament is a little harder to predict with World no 1 Caroline Wozniacki in good form and Belgian Kim Clijsters a serious contender, who could well start the tournament as favourite. Francesca Schiavone the Italian player who won her first Grand Slam title here last year will be hoping to repeat her great performance on the clay courts.
The prize money for the Singles Champions has been increased this year from $1.4 million to an impressive $1.7 million and the organizers of the tournament have said the total prize money will be $25 million. There has been speculation in recent years as to whether the tournament should be moved to another venue however it is now decided it will stay at the historic Roland Garros site.
The stadium which is rather small will be expanded and refurbished to provide improved facilities for players and the public. The plans include covering the present centre court which could allow evening matches to take place and building a new show court which will provide 5,000 seats.
If you think that Nadal can be usurped from his World Dominating position and you fancy somebody else to take the title home then the latest and best odds available are below
